The Qingming Festival originated as a day to commemorate the loyal minister Jie Zitui. According to legend, he chose to live in seclusion in the mountains, refusing rewards for his loyalty. In an attempt to bring him out, Duke Wen of Jin set the mountains on fire, which tragically led to his death. To express their longing and respect, people began to visit graves and honor their ancestors on this day, gradually forming the customs of the Qingming Festival. Besides honoring the deceased, there is also a tradition of enjoying the outdoors and tasting spring rolls.
During our activities, we will not only share the story of the Qingming Festival but also involve the children in making spring rolls. They will prepare the spring roll wrappers by adding sautéed cabbage, carrots, and eggs, followed by sweet peanut powder. We will guide the children step by step in wrapping the filling in the spring roll skin. Through this hands-on experience, the children will learn about food combinations and life skills. Finally, everyone will enjoy the delicious spring rolls they made themselves, which not only taste great but also bring a sense of accomplishment, making the Qingming Festival even warmer and more meaningful.
